Top American Mardy Fish has certainly had not only a breakthrough year but also the best of his career as the current U.S. No. 1 has qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals for the first time ever. But despite sending out some ecstatic messages on Twitter earlier in the day, Fish’s excitement was short lived as during his early round match against Juan Monaco, Fish had to retire due to an aggravation of a left hamstring injury.
After writhing in pain on court during his medical time out in his match, Fish said later in his press conference that he would play in London no matter what. Concern is high that Fish might not be able to perform at his best in ten days and could even have to bow out early in lieu of an alternate, currently Janko Tipsarevic, taking his place in the round robin format event. But plenty hope it doesn’t come to that as Fish’s efforts all year have made him a deserving recipient of an “elite eight” spot in London.
