Serena Dominates Zvonareva To Take Fourth Wimbledon Title.

Despite many expecting a tighter match, today’s Ladies’ Final proved to be a one way affair as Serena Williams easily defended her Wimbledon title with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Vera Zvonareva who, despite fighting throughout, was just overwhelmed by Williams’s serving and overall play. With her 13th Grand Slam title, Williams now passes Billie Jean King to take over the No. 6 spot in terms of overall women’s champions with Grand Slam titles.

Serving nine aces and only losing two points on her first serve, Williams never faced a break point the entire match. Though Zvonareva hung close with Williams in the opening games of the first set, Williams finally broke Zvonareva in the 4-3 game with a dramatic forehand topspin passing shot that had Williams bend on one knee to celebrate with a Rafael Nadal style fist pump. Willliams held serve to take the first set 6-3. Zvonareva had a bit of a letdown in the second set and lost her serve in the opening game. Williams never looked back and after Zvonareva double faulted to give Williams a 4-1 lead, it was a done deal. Williams served for the match at 5-2 and closed out the match with an emphatic smash.

At 28, Williams has a great opportunity to climb even higher in terms of overall Grand Slam titles as Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert have 18 each, a number that Williams could reach if she can win two or more Slams in the next few years. This performance by Williams, not just during today but all fortnight, proves she may be the best grass court player on the tour, including better than her sister Venus who may have reached her pinnacle at five Wimbledon titles. Meanwhile for Zvonareva, who wiped away a few tears during the trophy ceremony, the warm reception she received from the crowd and Williams herself after Zvonareva talked about how her dream was to play the finals on Centre Court one day may help push the Russian to a new level herself during the second part of her career.

But today was a coronation and confirmation for the reigning Queen of tennis. And though she may not have played in front of Queen Elizabeth II when the monarch visited Wimbledon earlier last week, Williams, appropriately, had the final bow on the greatest tennis court in the world.
