Serena Back For Fed Cup. Is It Fair?

According to Tennis.com, U.S. Federation Cup coach Mary Joe Fernandez announced that Serena Williams will be a part of the U.S. team for the first time since 2007. The U.S. will take on Italy in the Fed Cup Final on November 7th in hopes of winning the final tie for the first time since 2000.

Melanie Oudin, Liezel Huber and Alexa Glatch round out the team. Venus Williams will not participate.

Although Serena is 4-0 in lifetime Fed Cup, she did not play this year in the other ties and I actually think that she should not be involved in the final. I understand that Serena is a clutch player and will go in a heavy favorite, but it’s a little unfair to those other ladies who trudged through the whole year playing ties and then have Serena show up for a weekend. If Serena had played an earlier match this year, then she would be entitled to play for the final.

Am I being too harsh? Or is Mary Joe in her rights to get out the best player she can for the final? Let me know.
