Clijsters prevails against Venus in roller coaster match at Open

Kim Clijsters’s emotional comeback to the women’s game continued after winning a strange match against Venus Williams 6-0, 0-6, 6-4 in the fourth round of the U.S. Open.

Clijsters came out strong in the first set while Venus looked flat and moved very slowly due to her knee injury. Clijsters won the first set in twenty eight minutes.

Then in the second set, Venus seemed to wake up and started to move and serve better while Clijsters appeared to drift off mentally. Venus cruised to a second set 6-0 win.

In the third set, the match really began as both players exchange deep groundstroke rallies. Clijsters was able to break early and jumped out a 2-0 lead. Clijsters continued to hold serve in the third set and also managed to move Venus around in the rallies. Eventually Clijsters served for it at 5-4 and despite some nerves, came up with a big serve at 40-30 to close it out.

Clijsters will now play 18th seed Na Li who she is 3-1 against lifetime. Clijsters could potentially face Serena Williams in the semis if they both win their next round.
