Juan Martin Del Potro defended his Legg Mason title by defeating Andy Roddick 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8). JMDP got off to a slow start in the first set as he appeared bothered by the very hot court. But once he got into the match, he started to get his big serve and even bigger forehand going.
Roddick did get up an early break in the third, but JMDP hit some amazing returns to break Roddick at love. When they finally go to the tiebreak, JMDP only missed one first serve and hit three aces to finally power through for the win.
Although Roddick played well, he couldn’t seem to find a way to put the big man away. Though this is not as disappointing a loss as Wimbledon, this is another close final Roddick has lost. Hopefully he can find his form and put in a good performance in Montreal. Del Potro really impressed me with his fight despite looking worn down by the heat. Again he’s someone to watch for the U.S. Open as his game keeps getting better.
